House Builds
How Does a House Build Work?
When we schedule a build, we generally work 3 days. There will be a concrete slab waiting for us when we get there and we start with the framing of the house. We get the exterior walls up and secure, then we start with the roof rafters. After that we do the siding, then we install windows and doors. After the exterior shell is done, we put trim around all of the edges. Next we put the plywood on the roof and proceed to install shingles. After the roof is done, so are we. We basically build the shell and secure the house from outer elements. While we work, there are additional hired workers there installing the electricity and plumbing. After we leave, they come in and complete the finish work, installing the flooring, kitchen cabinets and appliances, sheet rock, and finishing touches. The whole process takes about 2 weeks after we are finished.

Who Can Help?
Anyone! We have had all age ranges come out and help. There is something for everyone to do, no experience required! We have a general contractor on site with his assistant and they guide us in how to do everything. Now that we are a little seasoned, we can pass on some knowledge to new builders. But we all started out without knowing the first thing about building a house, yet we did it, and it’s still standing strong! Typically we break off into teams so that we can multi-task and get more done. This year we had a siding team, windows and doors team, roof team, and trim team all working simultaneously and we were able to accomplish a lot in a short amount of time.
What are the Costs to Build a House?
It costs about $10,000 to build a large house. They are roughly the size of 2 bedroom apartments, with a kitchen, living area, and one bath. The more work we are able to accomplish while we are there, the less we have to hire out, thus saving on costs. The materials are already purchased and we have tools ready for workers. We are responsible for raising the funds for each house and the family does not have to pay for the house.
